“The most nervous I ever was, standing on a first tee, was my first Masters in 1968. The second most nervous was at Milwaukie C.C. (at the 1969 Walker Cup), being the first person to hit a ball for the United States. The flag goes up, the national anthem’s played, the whole nine yards. We’re playing alternate shot. Steve Melnyk was my partner. I proceeded to hit the ugliest snap hook you ever saw. We were way up on top of a hill (on the first tee). 5,000 people standing around. ‘Oh that’s ok partner, no problem’ (says Steve). We get down the hill onto the fairway ‘You son of a bitch’ (says Steve).”

“It (Interlachen C.C. in 1993) was a great experience, both as being a part of a team and just competing in it….. I played pretty well which was kind of a bonus. The coolest part was that I played with another hometown guy, John Harris, and we won our (foursomes) match. We had a very strong team, a lot of great players.”

“It was a great experience. The first match was me and Colt (Knost). We played against Rory McIlroy (and Jonny Caldwell). I remember how nervous I was on the first tee. There must have been 5,000 people but they’re all walking on the fairway behind you so it felt like 100,000 people. The team we had was unbelievable. I think pretty much every guy is on Tour. So we had a pretty solid team. We won so that was a lot of fun.”

A lot of great friendships came out of that week, so it had an impact on me personally. Vinny (Giles) ended up representing me. Jim Simons and I became very good friends. That’s the kind of thing that meant the most.”

“It was a dream to make the team. To play with guys like Jay Sigel and Scott Verplank. It was a huge goal of mine for 1983 and ’85. I wanted to win the U.S. Amateur but my biggest goal was go make the Walker Cup team.

Then there was just the atmosphere. I mean, Pine Valley and the Walker Cup….it was the dream Walker Cup in just about every way you can imagine.”
